From the Superintendent
This week's Board of Directors meeting on Thursday evening will include two important topics that may be of interest:
- Title IX athletic status. At the June 3, 2026 Board meeting, I presented this earlier Title IX Update. This presentation included general information about Title IX and how it relates to athletics; findings from a recent review of all GHS athletic programs; and recommendations going forward to upgrade and respond to areas of athletic programs that require more attention. On Thursday, Athletic Director David Shapiro will provide the Board with current information regarding the district's ongoing work in response to an external review of all GHS athletic programs.
- Budget preview of anticipated expenses associated with the shift to new grade spans in 2027-28. It may feel like it's a bit early to be talking about the district's budget a year in advance, but with the upcoming opening of the new Carolyn F. Small School and One Campus shift in grade levels, I am starting to bring information to the Board well in advance of the typical budget season. Much of the anticipated budgetary implications in 2027-28 include staffing increases for the new school building, a new state law shifting special education services for 3 and 4 year olds to local schools, continuing staffing additions to meet increases in student enrollment, debt service on the new building, estimated utility costs, and expense reductions after the modular classrooms are removed.
As an aside, Board meetings are generally held in the Gyger Room (GHS) starting at 6:00 PM, along with being live streamed and recorded on our YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/@msad5142/featured. Board meeting videos are timestamped to correlate with agenda topics for ease of reference. Board meeting agendas and minutes are posted on the Board of Directors page on our website.

It’s an exciting week for our 5th-grade artists, who have been hard at work on a fantastic project titled "Portrait of a Chicken." Artwork by Mrs. Provencher's class will be on display in the Exhibition Hall at the Cumberland Fair!

Volunteer Application Process Update
To create a more consistent, streamlined, and seamless experience for our volunteers, MSAD #51 is updating our volunteer application process. Beginning this school year, all volunteers will be required to submit a new volunteer application annually.
What do I need to do?
- New volunteers: Complete the volunteer application before volunteering in our schools.
- Returning volunteers: Submit a new application for the current school year, even if you have volunteered with us in the past.
- Once your application is approved: Contact your student’s school to learn about current volunteer opportunities.
This annual process allows us to maintain current volunteer information and ensure that all volunteers meet district requirements each year. We appreciate your cooperation and your continued support of our schools and students!

Water Service Work
We have been informed that the upcoming water service work is scheduled to be completed on Friday, October 9, and Monday, October 12.
REMINDER: Friday, October 9: Teacher-only day with no students on campus. Work is expected to begin at 7:00 AM and continue until approximately 4:00–5:00 PM.
Monday, October 12: No school. Work is expected to follow the same 7:00 AM–4:00/5:00 PM schedule.
Weekend traffic: Traffic will not be affected by the work.
This schedule is pending any significant rain events on October 9 or 12. We will share updates if the schedule needs to change.
