MSAD #51 District Newsletter - November 21, 2023

From the Superintendent

porterThere are so many important ways that our schools connect with students beyond the classroom. After three years of declining participation in athletic programs mainly due to the pandemic, this Fall has seen a resurgence of high school and middle school student athletes in our programs. With 40% of all high school students and 30% of all middle school students playing on an athletic team this season, this is a good sign for the winter and spring seasons ahead.

In order to further support our athletic programs, we have moved the last group of regular coaching positions into the district's operating budget, something we have incrementally been doing for years and now have met this goal. In the past, Boosters would pick up the cost of most assistant coaches, a huge financial burden on these organizations to fundraise for these positions. Moving all coaching roles into the budget frees up the Boosters to help defray the costs of incidentals that are unique to each athletic program.

Additionally, the athletic and technology departments worked on installing live streaming for field and gym events to provide more access to the public on the MSAD #51 YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@msad5142/featured. This allows family members who live away, along with community members who cannot attend games, to watch games and competitions live and after the fact.

Improvements to the field house has been a goal of the district, with a dedicated weight room, three restrooms, and a stand-alone fully-applianced concession building all recent upgrades. Future plans include moving the maintenance equipment out of the field house to another location so that the building is dedicated to athletics. Hutchins Field has had recent upgrades in LED lighting, audio systems, and an ADA walkway to the bleachers installed. Capital reserve funds have been used over time to make these improvements that enhance the experience for our student athletes, coaches, and spectators.

I am very thankful to be part of a school community that goes the extra mile for our students in all of our curricular, co-curricular, and extra-curricular  offerings. My very best to all families and staff this Thanksgiving week.

Regards,
Jeff Porter

Liberty Bell received a presidential pardon this week. She can thank Tad Lincoln, Abraham Lincoln's son, who burst into a Cabinet meeting to beg his father to spare Jack the turkey back in 1863. Jack became the first pardoned turkey (and a White House pet) and the tradition continues.

Special Message from the Board Chair

Thank you to all the teachers, ed techs, custodial and maintenance staff, lunch staff, coaches, bus drivers, librarians, secretaries, administrators, and all the staff at MSAD #51 who work so hard on behalf of our community and our students. A school is only as good as its people โ€“ and you are the best.

Thank you to our parents, guardians, and families who are incredible partners. Thank you to all our volunteers, whether you help in the classroom, in the library, on the PTO, with Foundation51, one of the many booster clubs, on the court, trail, track, ice, or field; chaperoning a field trip, bringing snacks to an event, whatever it is you do on top of parenting your student. Thank you.

Thank you to the Board. From stepping up and putting yourself out there in an election โ€“ which is not a comfortable thing to do โ€“ to giving up time away from family and work to serve our district. To our student reps, who come to these meetings, and other committee meetings engaged and prepared and then have to juggle homework and college applications and sports and activities. You are all incredible.

And thank you to our community in the towns of Cumberland and North Yarmouth for staying engaged, for advocating for what you believe in, for helping us provide the best education possible.

Thank you all and I hope you all have crowded tables and full bellies this Thursday.

Sincerely,
Leanne Candura
