Update from the Superintendent - May 26, 2026

We are approaching the half-way mark of the One Campus construction project. This project began last summer and has included multiple projects and phases. The new artificial turf field came online in August 2025 and the new maintenance building was completed last November. Since July 2025, construction of the new Carolyn Small School and addition to MIW have been underway. The MIW addition is expected to be turned over to the district by the end of August 2026 and the Small School is slated for completion in June 2027.

Beyond the physical construction and reconfiguration of the MSAD 51 campus, there is a lot of work behind the scenes planning for the massive shift in grade spans that will occur at the beginning of the 2027-28 school year. Over the last year, here are some of the planning activities that have been ongoing:

  • Regular planning and monitoring meetings with contractors and architects of all aspects of One Campus project
  • PK-8 staffing reassignments in advance of grade span shifts (completed)
  • Development of an updated Pre-K plan for 3-and 4-year-olds with special needs, as required by state law
  • PK-8 curriculum coordination and adjustments in advance of the new grade spans
  • Naming of new school (completed)
  • Designing both playgrounds at Carolyn Small School
  • On-campus and off-campus traffic and pedestrian upgrades to support the One Campus project
  • Transition committees for new grade spans (PK-1, 2-4, 5-8) to plan for the 2027-28 year

The PK-8 Transition Committees referenced above include staff, parents/guardians, and administrators serving on each of the three committees (PK-1, 2-4, 5-8). Many thanks to the 36 stakeholders who are sharing their time and expertise each month to help make the One Campus shift a success when school opens in August 2027.

Please look for a separate communication that will be sent out on Wednesday with detailed information about the activities of each of these committees over the last six months. Each transition committee will continue their important work throughout the 2026-27 school year.
