MSAD #51 District Newsletter - January 13, 2023

From the Superintendent

Last week, consultant Lawrence Alexander was the guest speaker at an all-school assembly held at GHS. Mr. Alexander focused on school culture: How we Treat Each Other, The Impact of Our Words and Actions, and Who We Want to Be. He also addressed actions that can harm the culture of the school community and the individuals who make up the community, whether through racism, anti-semitism, ableism, classism, homophobia, or sexism, among others. He spoke of how we can each do our part to help, without also creating unintended harm. Lawrence's message was about how to move beyond categorizing each other, which only serves to diminish each of us and our collective culture, and move to a place of mutual respect.

These kinds of shared student experiences align to the district's Strategic Plan/Priority 1: Wellness, the Foundation of Teaching and Learning. The district's focus for 2022-23 is providing all students with experiences and connections that promote inclusion and belonging to the school community. We know that each student's school experience is unique and that an array of approaches and supports are necessary to get us closer to furthering a culture of inclusiveness, which is why we have worked hard over the last few years to increase access and services in ways that promote and sustain well-being.

This year's focus on belonging has included monthly school-wide assemblies and continued work around 'responsive classrooms' at MIW; daily community meeting blocks and school-wide assemblies that feature student presentations at GMS 4-5; twice-weekly advisory classes and resuming the onsite experience for middle schoolers with the Rippleffect program at GMS 6-8; and Camp Kiev's work with freshmen this Fall along with schoolwide programming such as Lawrence Alexander's visit with the students last week. All of this has been particularly important as we move further and further away from the pandemic, and all learn again, together, how to be part of a physically and emotionally healthy school community.

In order to truly create a culture where mutual respect and empathy are markers in our school community, each of us must make a personal choice to free each other of labels and categories. By doing so, we are not just freeing each other, we are also freeing ourselves. As singer-songwriter Harry Chapin once wrote, "Until we free each other, we cannot free the land."

Foremost, Rangers 'Lead the Way' and we are proud of our students' efforts to help us build a culture of belonging in our schools.
