Cannabis (marijuana) use in Maine is on the rise, and use among students is following similar upward trends. This is concerning for many reasons, not the least of which is that today’s marijuana products contain very high levels of THC – the ingredient responsible for the effects on a person’s mental state. The National Institutes of Health reports that marijuana use as a youth can cause long-term, possibly permanent changes in the brain and lead to other health concerns, including cancer and psychosis.

To help families better understand the dangers of marijuana use, a regional informational program entitled “Understanding Today’s Cannabis: This isn’t your parents’ weed” on Monday, January 9, from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. will take place in the Performing Arts Center at Yarmouth High School.

The speaker for the evening will be Dave Packhem, Founder and Executive Director of Students Empowered to End Dependency (SEED), a group of area  community organizations that collaborated over the past three years to produce Voices of Hope, a documentary series on addiction that began airing on WGME-13 in the spring of 2021. Students and staff from Greely High School were engaged in this project from its earliest stages and remain committed to helping SEED further its mission to spread the word about substance use and addiction in Maine.

Dave will bring with him several panelists, including medical professionals and recovering addicts, who will interact with the audience and share their knowledge and experience on all matters related to substance addiction – and specifically, the use of cannabis.

To help us gauge interest in the event, we ask that you fill out the three-question response form linked here, which also provides you with an opportunity to indicate the type of information you hope to glean from the presentation.

Whether or not you can attend on January 9, I encourage you to watch the Voices of Hope series from 2021 and 2022, and to keep an eye out for the yet-to-be-released cannabis episode.

Regards,
Jeff Porter
