From the Superintendent

jeff porterSpring is in the air as we transition to longer days of sunlight. This is always a busy and exciting time of the school year as many students are involved in spring athletics, concerts, theater productions (Rent  is playing at the Greely Center for the Arts this weekend), and various field trips. Even our first international student exchange in two years is underway, with a group from France arriving this past weekend and a group of our high school students traveling to France over the upcoming break.

As we return to a more "typical" spring, we also are mindful that the last two years have taken a toll (and continue to do so) on our students, staff, parents, and community. The pandemic and its many consequences have brought to light the very real feeling of anxiety for many, which is why this year's district Strategic Plan included a mental health priority component. Over the next few days, all students in grades 6-12 will be viewing the film Angst: Building Resilience which seeks to shed light on anxiety and ways to be aware of it and mitigate its effects. There are community licenses available for families to view the film for free. Many thanks to MSAD #51 mental health specialist Eric Brown, the PTO, IndieFlix, and the community mental health collaborative group for their work in bringing this important resource to the school community.

As a follow-up to my message last week about the nominations of Karl Francis and Cory Munsey to be principals of GHS and MIW, respectively, I wish to thank the Board for their unanimous support of both new principals early this week. Both school leaders will begin their new duties on July 1.

Finally, we continue to work through the school district budget for 2022-23. After receiving our health insurance rates this week, we were able to drop the proposed expenditure increase from 5.4% to 4.6%, which will result in a corresponding drop in the mil rate and tax effect. The proposed budget retains some teaching positions to keep class sizes slightly smaller, adds teaching positions for continued enrollment increases at MIW, invests in mathematics interventions and new programming materials, and includes a new school safety initiative that has been recommended by the district safety committee. A public hearing on the proposed budget is set for Monday, April 25 @ 6:30 pm at the GCA.

Regards,
Jeff Porter
