Broadmoor School

Broadmoor Farm sat at the corner of Main Street, Tuttle Rd, and Blanchard Road. In 1874, George Blanchard started the Broadmoor Farm with purebred Jersey cattle, which became widely famous throughout the United States and sold for as much as $1,500. Many earned the highest honors from the American Jersey Cattle Club. George planted apple orchards on Broadmoor Farm, situated behind the Blanchard house at 371 Tuttle Rd. In 1935, the Farm passed to George's son Arthur Blanchard. Arthur maintained the orchards and operated an apple stand at the site until 1974. In that year, 1974, a hundred years after it began, Broadmoor Farm was sold outside the Blanchard family. Greely High School was originally Greely Institute, and was established through the generosity of Eliphalet Greely and his wife Elizabeth Loring. Both Cumberland natives, they wanted to give something back to the town that they both loved so much. Having been unable to have children of their own, they decided that a gift of a free public high school would be their legacy. In his will, he left $27,500 to be used by the town to erect and supply the school. His widow purchased four acres of land from Enos Blanchard at the corner of Main Street and Tuttle Rd and the school was built.

For reference: Historically, areas named Broadmoor have been used for dairy farming and general agriculture due to their specific geography and access to water sources.

"Cornerstones are stones of learning.”
