QR Codes in the Classroom

What if you could adapt a literacy lesson for each of your students with a simple barcode? Mabel I. Wilson School’s first grade teacher, Allison Fluet, is doing just that. Allison was awarded a grant from Foundation 51 in the spring of 2014 to purchase IPad minis for use in her classroom. The grant, “Using  QR Codes to Enhance Literacy in the Primary Classroom,” has been a success thus far and enthusiasm is growing amongst students and staff. 

“There is very little technology used at this grade level and someone needed to take the jump and model how it can be used in a meaningful, easy, engaging way,” says Allison. Allison currently has 11 Ipad minis in her class room, six were funded by the grant. Use of the Ipads started in April and the students have been more engaged and have gained confidence and independence in their learning. 

QR codes (quick response code, a simple, scan-able barcode image), can be used as an interesting method to capture a student’s attention and make lesson material more interactive. Students use the IPad to scan the barcode which leads the child to a certain educational application (app). These apps are hand selected (by the teacher) for each student depending on what focus area they need to work on. Allison began using the IPads and the QR codes to enhance literacy instruction in the areas of fluency, comprehension and high frequency words. The programs that a child can use are limitless; audio books, voice recording, high frequency word practice, stopwatch timer for managing reading time, and much more.

Feedback from students, parents and staff throughout the school has been positive. There have been four informational sessions lead by Allison for staff at MIW. Nearly 80% of the entire staff have attended; while some are nervous about the use of new and different technology, most have been receptive and excited to use QR codes with their own students. Allison is enthusiastic about this program and hopes to continue using the barcodes in additional teaching areas where applicable.   More Spotlights...
