The MSAD #51 Board of Directors voted this evening to select Jeff Porter as the new Superintendent for MSAD #51, serving the communities of Cumberland and North Yarmouth.

Mr. Porter currently serves as the Assistant Superintendent for the Biddeford School Department, a position he has held for seven years. Prior to this post he served as an elementary school principal for eleven years, most recently in the Portland Public Schools. He began his career as an elementary school classroom teacher. Mr. Porter earned a bachelor’s of science in education and a master’s degree in educational administration from the University of Maine, Orono, and earned a post-master’s certificate of advanced studies in educational leadership from the University of Southern Maine. A resident of Scarborough, Mr. Porter is married and has two school-aged children. He grew up in Yarmouth, ME and attended Yarmouth public schools.

Board Chair Karen Campbell expressed excitement regarding the appointment: “The Board developed an ambitious leadership profile of a strong candidate for this position based upon information received from various stakeholders -- we were looking for a knowledgeable and creative educational leader who motivates and inspires all students to attain their personal best, an excellent communicator who is visible and approachable and develops positive relationships with community members, and a collaborative administrator able to manage school resources effectively. I am delighted that we were able to attract Jeff Porter, a very talented and experienced educator who possesses all these vital skills and attributes. He is an excellent match for our district.”

Biddeford Superintendent Jeremy Ray praised Porter as an excellent leader who is well-qualified for the position, “He is exactly the kind of leader that the school department should be trying to hire… His support for teachers, leadership, the community and students has had a dramatic impact on the positive growth of [our] organization.”

Members of the MSAD #51 community have taken an active role in the Superintendent search process that began in October, 2013 with the selection of the New England School Development Council (NESDEC) as the contracted executive search firm for the district. Approximately 115 people participated in focus groups led by the NESDEC liaison, Dr. Ken DeBenedictis. The Board elicited the assistance of an 11-member Screening Committee composed of administrators, teachers, town officials, parents, community and board members who reviewed candidate applications, developed interview questions, conducted candidate interviews, and identified a slate of candidates to advance to the full Board. The Screening Committee reviewed over 20 applications. Upon completion of the interview process, the Board voted to advance Jeff Porter as the sole finalist. Mr. Porter visited the MSAD #51 campus on Thursday, February 27 and had the opportunity to meet with staff, community members and the Board.

Mr. Porter will succeed Sally Loughlin, the Director of Curriculum, Assessment, Instruction and Professional Development for MSAD #51, who has served as interim Superintendent since November 1, 2013. Loughlin replaced Robert G. Hasson, Jr., Ed.D. who assumed the position of Assistant Deputy Director of the Maine School Management Association and Executive Director of the Maine School Superintendent Association in November, 2013. Dr. Hasson served as the Superintendent of Schools for MSAD #51 for over twenty years. Mr. Porter was hired at an annual salary of $125,000, and his three-year contract will commence July 1, 2014.
