Mask Guidance

Some questions have come forward around outdoor mask-wearing, and hopefully the information below will help to clarify. Here's the latest guidance from the Maine Dept. of Education for public schools, amended 4/28/21. Please note that while "guidance" is the term used, Maine public schools are expected to follow them.

MDOE Guidance on School-Day Mask-wearing:

In addition to the time during which students may be eating or drinking with a minimum of 6’ physical distancing, school staff may offer highly-structured and well-supervised mask breaks during the school day. Such mask breaks should be limited to 5 minutes each, up to a maximum of 15 minutes per day. Breaks should take place in a classroom cohort when possible. Mask breaks may take place outdoors if 6 feet distance can be maintained. (Updated 4/28/21)

View Current PK-12 and Adult Education Public Health Guidance

This guidance is different from that of the Maine Principals’ Association (MPA), which oversees state athletics for schools. The reason for the difference is that athletics is considered to be a co-curricular program and not part of the school's core program, as well as largely occurring after-school hours.

MPA Guidance on Athletics and Mask-wearing:

  • Masks are not required for OUTDOOR practices and competitions.  Masks are recommended when 6 feet of physical distance is hard to maintain (e.g., athletes on the bench). They are also required when individuals go inside (e.g., to locker rooms, rest rooms, or on a bus).
  • Spectators are not required to wear a mask at outside events if they are able to maintain 6 feet of distancing.
  • The common language is 6 feet of distancing when outdoors. It is not feasible to have students maintaining 6 feet of distancing during the school day at recess given the numbers of students and the movement of students during play. There is more flexibility for after-school athletics than for school-day activities like recess.

If you have questions about this, please consider contacting the Maine CDC as they are the agency that provides this guidance.
