Last evening, September 30, the MSAD 51 Board of Directors convened for a special meeting to accept the resignation of our current Superintendent Robert G. Hasson, Jr. Ed.D. effective November 1, 2013. As was announced by the board previously, Bob has accepted the position of Assistant Deputy Director of the Maine School Management Association and Executive Director of the Maine School Superintendent Association.
Prior to the meeting, the board had the opportunity to review the credentials of an internal candidate who is qualified to assume the position of interim Superintendent, Sally Loughlin our current Director of Curriculum, Assessment, Instruction and Professional Development. Sally served as the Assistant Superintendent in RSU 75 before she joined MSAD 51 in 2010.
All members had the opportunity to interview Sally for the interim position, and we engaged in a lengthy discussion regarding her skills and experience. Following that discussion, the majority (7-2) voted to authorize the chairperson to hire her through June 30, 2014, or perhaps prior to that date if a search committee is successful in recruiting a successor who is able to assume leadership before the school year concludes. Our group cited Sally’s ability to lead our district effectively in the short term, her availability to work with the current superintendent for one month to help ensure a seamless transition, her integral knowledge of and involvement in a number of initiatives that will affect the district in the coming year, and her capacity to work collaboratively with the board and the professional staff during this critical transition as factors that made her a commendable candidate. The two dissenting votes stated clearly their confidence that Sally is a qualified candidate, however they preferred to engage in a wider search that required additional time.
We will meet again next Monday evening, October 7, at Greely High School Library at 7pm for a regularly scheduled board meeting. At that meeting we will begin to explore the development of a process to recruit a new superintendent. I hope you will join me in congratulating Sally on her new role and in supporting her over the next few months as she takes on this important position.
