The Learned Ladies is a witty comedy in two acts. Adapted and translated from Moliere's 1672 masterpiece, this version takes place in the 1920s and features a pretentious family from the privileged class. The translator, Freyda Thomas, has kept the rhyming couplets and basic story line, but added a few modern twists to delight the audience. The lively cast of characters includes female relatives thirsty for knowledge and freedom, a weak-kneed husband, a mediocre poet with little literary talent but lots of sex appeal, and servants who refuse to learn proper French. In the end the "learned ladies" return to their senses; the charlatan is unmasked; the young couple united, and Chrysale's household restored. Greely Drama is pleased to present a story of delightful wit that is both classic and contemporary. |
