Dear Community Members,

As many of you are aware, Governor Lepage’s administration and members of the 126th Legislature are discussing the amount of General Purpose Aid that will be distributed to school systems in the year ahead. As we formulate MSAD #51’s  budget for the 2013-2014 school year, administrators and the Board of Director’s Finance Committee are working to balance the programmatic needs of our students, the decline in state funding, and the tax impact on our communities.    At our meeting on Monday, February 4th, 2013 at 7:00 PM in the Greely High School Library, MSAD #51’s Board of Directors will be discussing what we know about the State of Maine’s funding forecast and our preliminary budget conversations. We encourage members of the public who are interested in learning more about the budget for the 2013-2014 school years to join us.

Preceding the meeting on February 4th at 6:00 PM, the Board will receive a report from Dr. Michael Opuda, author of a Special Education analysis commissioned by MSAD #51 and three other local school districts. In 2012, MSAD #51, Falmouth, Yarmouth and Cape Elizabeth requested a comparison of special education programs, services, staff, andexpenditures among the four school administrative units (SAUs). Programs were also compared to the state averages. The objective was to better address public concerns and ensure the delivery of high quality and effective special education services at reasonable costs.  Dr. Opuda will be sharing the findings from his report at MSAD #51’s Board of Directors Meeting at 6:00 PM on February 4th in the Greely High School Library.
