Skyline Farm, North Yarmouth: Plow Day, May 16

On Saturday, May 16, 10 a.m., teams of horses will plow Skyline Farm’s paddocks to improve the quality of the soil for future use.

 

Skyline Farm at 95 The Lane, North Yarmouth, is holding its 7th Annual Plow Day, a free public demonstration that brings to life the word ‘horsepower’. The teams will begin plowing at 10 a.m., break for lunch, and finish sometime in the early afternoon. Horse-drawn wagon rides will shuttle the public to the demonstration areas where teamsters will describe the proceedings and answer questions.

 

From 10-11 a.m., $5 pony rides for children will be given by Donna Thurston of Winterberry Farm,North Yarmouth, and her helpers.

 

From 10 a.m.-1:30 p.m. visit craftsmen demonstrating old-fashioned skills that were used in the horse-drawn era, such as wheel-making. Master Gardener Joel Leak will share his knowledge about growing vegetables and fruits. Members of the Cumberland County 4-H Goat Club, White Pine Caprines, will share their knowledge and show off their adorable goats. View the new museum exhibit “Maine Street”, featuring horse-drawn vehicles that were routinely seen parked alongside Maine’s main streets.

 

From 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. refreshments from the grill and baked goods will be for sale under the tent. Rain Date is Sunday, May 17. Parking is available in the field beyond the outdoor arena and along one side of The Lane. For more information, contact Pamela Ames, 829-5708 orinfo@skylinefarm.org.
