May, 2015 MSAD #51 Achievements & Recognitions

The achievements recognized at this meeting are but a sampling of the great things being accomplished within our District.  For additional achievements please refer to the District’s website.

Today the Board would like to highlight several happenings at Mabel I Wilson:

Family Literacy Night at MIW

Dr. Seuss’ birthday was celebrated with a Family Literacy Night. Students were able to visit different stations to participate in activities. They made Oobleck, listened to read alouds, and checked out iPad apps and websites that support literacy. Children created artwork, visited a Photo Booth, made a “Cat in the Hat” striped hat, and played a Green Eggs and Ham Rhyming Game.  Everyone enjoyed snacks such as One Fish, Two Fish Goldfish, Hop on Popcorn, Cat in the Hat cheese sticks & parfaits.

This event couldn’t have been so successful without the fabulous volunteers!  A big thank you to MIW staff who prepared activities and who volunteered that night: Teresa Folley, Alyssa Robbins, Johna King, Kathryn Begos, Margaret Brown, Allison Fluet, Allison Griffin, Mary Train, Theresa Cameron-Raymond, Janet Hotham, Jacki Lyon, Candy Allen, Sallie Hunter, Kathi Kearney, and MIW friend, Jean Swan.

An especially big thank you to PTO for their help recruiting the many parents who supported this successful event volunteering and making creative snacks to match our Seuss theme!

The Green Committee

The Green Committee sponsored its second annual "Green Week”.  Their mission is to celebrate earth stewardship and to educate about how to better take care of our earth. The theme this year was the "Full Plant Cycle" and bulletin boards were prepared to give students a visual of the plant cycle. The students learned about the topics of recycling, composting, energy and water conservation, clean air and water and ways to make the world a better place. The Green Committee even collected milk cartons in the lunchroom to reuse/recycle during Green Week. The week culminated with the staff and students wearing green to celebrate Earth stewardship.

National Poetry Month

MIW was a fun place to be in April during Poetry Month! Teachers and students read poetry during lunch “Poetry Jam”. Third grade students recited poems each Wednesday during the morning announcements. Many poems were displayed throughout the building for staff and

students to enjoy. Thursday, April 30 was “Keep a Poem in Your Pocket Day”. Teachers and students chose poems to keep in their pockets to share with others throughout the day.

The Annual K-5 Poetry Jam will be held tomorrow, May 19th, beginning at 5:30 at GMS.

Art Show

Last week, the Student Art Show at Mabel I. Wilson opened to great reviews. Our students thoroughly enjoyed showing off their beautiful artwork to their parents and community members.  Congratulations to the artists as well as art teachers, Lynda McCann-Olsen and Joanne Matusko.  A special thank you to the volunteers who hung the art. Some of the amazing pieces featured in the show will be included in the next Ranger Connection eNewsletter.

Spring Into Summer

Tuesday, June 2nd from 5:30-6:30 there will be various stations set up in the MIW library with ideas for families to keep students engaged in learning throughout the summer.  Some stations will include ideas for books at various levels, board game ideas, ipad apps, summer reading programs, math games and more!  Teresa Folley, K/1 Literacy Teacher Leader, Alyssa Robbins, 2/3 Literacy Teacher Leader, and Clare Harrington, K-5 Math Coach will all be available to chat and answer questions.
