Achievements and Recognition for MSAD #51, April 2014

Mabel I Wilson School

This past month, MIW held a parent informational night for writing and math attended by approximately 50 parents. In addition, they learned some ways to support their children with homework and other ways to reinforce math and writing. We appreciate the dedication of those parents who were able to attend and those who expressed interest, yet couldn't join us on that evening. We hope to hold more informational evenings again in the fall. Thank you to Janet Anderson, our literacy coach, and Clare Harrington, our math coach, for their work in presenting that night.

Recently, our school has benefitted from the efforts of a small group hoping to improve our recycling efforts. We held a Go Green Week in the beginning of March with a different message each day. We are focusing on improving what we are already doing for recycling at this time rather than starting something new. Yet, this group has allowed us to increase awareness of our efforts.

In a couple weeks, we will be traveling to Brazil as a whole day, school wide event. We have a group of teachers working with Linda Collins and Rachael Whitmarsh on the planning of this day. They have spent countless hours getting ready. We hope to have volunteers join us on that day to help and are looking forward to a fun-filled day of learning about Brazil.

North Yarmouth Memorial School

The Greely Color Guard just completed another successful season!  This year's show was Grease.  The team performed at four shows, even traveling to New Hampshire and competing in a different circuit.  They were awarded a silver medal at the final show on March 23rd.  The group participated in Family Arts Night and will be performing in the Memorial Day parade.  The group is coached by fourth grade teacher, Carrie Begley.

Greely Middle School

The sixth grade math team competed in the Southern Maine Elementary Math league on March 27th at the Holiday Inn by the Bay. Out of 30 schools participating, the Greely Middle School team placed second.  Three members of the team were also recognized for their high scores;  Jay Philbrick, Aaron Howell and Toby Kany.

On March 22nd, over 35 Middle Schools competed at the State Jazz Festival.  Greely Middle School Jazz Band (Division 1) earned 3rd overall.  In addition, Greg Pershing was recognized with an outstanding musicianship award in Division 1 (5 in the state awarded in each division).

The GMS Drama Club had several successful public performances of The Dream Rehearsed

on late March including a performance on March 28th  during a school assembly.

On April 1st, GMS hosted Family Arts Night which was a smashing success attended by many families and showcased the artistic talent in our community.

Natalie Dedon is one of twenty finalists in the Merriconeag Poetry Festival.  Maine poet Richard Blanco, who read his own poem at President Obama's inauguration, selected Natalie's poem as one of the best poems they received from Maine students.  Natalie will go to the festival to be held in early May where she will read her poem to the audience, meet Mr. Blanco, and receive a gift.
