MSAD 51 students are screened for hearing and vision acuity in grades: K, 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9 (per recommendation of the School Health Advisory Committee of the Maine Department of Education). Additional screening is offered to students who self-refer, or are referred by a teacher or parent/guardian. Parents will be notified only if screening results do not meet the following criteria:
Visual acuity for each eye must be 20/30 or better both near and far. Preschool and Kindergarten must see at least 20/40.
An audiogram which indicates that a child is hearing better than 35db at all frequencies.
If a child does not meet the state criteria, the school nurse will contact the parent or guardian to recommend further professional evaluation.
